Traveling While Curly: Travel Tips

“The bigger the hair, the harder they stare.”

Ladies, how many of you worry about how your hair will react while on vacation? Do you agonize over having the right products, in the right amounts, and if the weather at your destination will cooperate? I go through this dilemma every single time I travel. Might I add that I only travel with a carry on, so full size bottles are out of the question.  Just when I think I have my traveling hair routine down packed, reality strikes once I am on vacation. I had a quick beach getaway to the Bahamas for Memorial Day weekend, so I implemented a new hair routine to fight the heat and humidity coming up against me.

Before

For starters, I prepped my hair by washing it three days before my trip. My curls really shape up after day three, which by then I would have been in full vacation mode already. Two days before the trip, I did twists on my hair to lock in moisture and avoid some frizz. I ended up getting some beautiful definition from twisting my hair, therefore I repeated it again the night before the trip.

During

I knew that I could not match up to heat and humidity ahead of me, therefore I had to get creative. I brought accessories and also rocked creative updo’s once I noticed the frizz was getting out of hand. I doubled up on my hair products and I could not leave the spritzer bottle at home.

After

As soon as I touched home, I applied a deep conditioner as part of my wash routine. The sun was shining in all its glory this weekend and although I’m thankful for my tan, my hair felt fried.

Overall, I am satisfied with the results of paying a little more attention to my hair while away. Keeping in mind that this was only a weekend trip, I feel like I won this battle! My biggest hair challenge now is managing the curls on longer trips. What about you?  Do you have advice you’d like to leave in the comments?

This is soooo helpful! I constantly struggle with my crazy wavy/frizzy/curly hair when I travel. After spending last weekend in New Orleans, by the time I got to the airport I looked like I’d crawled out of the swamp. Thanks so much!

After a vacation near the sea, deep conditioner is your best friend! Loved this post and this is the most stunning location. Where abouts is it?

Your hair is freaking gorgeous!!! I don’t have curly hair, but I travel with my bestie who has ringlets sent from heaven and she always ties her hair up during the day and after a shower leaves conditioner and moroccan oil in her curls for when we go out.

      You’re welcome!

Some great ideas here! I’m always susceptible to highly frizzy hair, especially in humidity so it’s always a chore. Usually, I just end up falling back on the go-to up-do and call it a day.

    • Curlywanders June 7, 2017 at 11:20 pm

Lol that’s how I feel most of the time

your curls are gorrrrrrgeeeous! My hair’s straight and frizzy so to manage it I’ve just gone the short route and deal with a pixie cut. I’ve had short curly hair before but I had to spend so much time gelling and waxing and fixing it that I just cut it all off eventually. Too much management of hair for me on a trip!

    • Curlywanders June 7, 2017 at 11:19 pm

I’m not brave enough to cut it all off but I know what you mean! Thanks for reading!

I, too, am a natural curly headed gal! I tend to let my hair loose on vacation! Your hair is gorgeous!

as someone who straightens their hair because I can not control the curls…this post was helpful.Definitely going to try some of your tips.Thank you!!

  • Aubrie June 8, 2017 at 12:48 am

Thanks for the advice, such great tips! I love your hair and I love the accessories you wore for your trip! My hair is more wavy than anything so I like to put it into wet braids and let it do its thing in the morning, usually it works out, but I definitely need some product so it doesn’t get frizzy in humidity!

I feel like I live in a ponytail on vacation! Love the creative up-do, and I’ll definitely be taking a spritzer with me from now on. Thanks for the tips!

I have long straight hair and sometimes that is even a hassle, so I feel you and I am happy I do not have to make those preparations when I travel. Love the curls, though! 🙂
